THE FIRST RACE OF THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP IN L'ESCALA HAS BEEN CANCELLED BECAUSE OF THE RAIN AN LACK OF WIND

In spite of the favourable previsious for today, the first race has been cacelled.

Because of the lack of wind the boats have been at a Standstill in the departure line waiting for the wind that they had enjoyed on the days previous to the race.

At noon the jury hoisted the flag to adjourn first temporanily and later definitely this mornings race.

Torben Grael, the sailor who is going to represent Brazil at the Olympics in Athens, praised the organisation of Club Nautic l'Escala and joked about not being used to this cold weather. He also dared to mention some of the probable winners, for instance, the Swede frederik Lööf, number one at the worlds ranking, the British Ian Percey or the French Pascal Rambeau, the winner of the World Championship held in Cadiz.

When we asked him about the Spanish posibilitys of classification for the Olympics, he says it's quite probable that it's one of four countrys together with Canada through Ross Macdonald (World Champion and Bronce medal in Barcelona 92), Portugal through Alfonso Domingos winner of the latest Bacardi Cup, and also Germany.

Torben Grael is considered one of the best sailors not only on Star class but in many other Olympic classes. He wont a Bronce medal in Seül in "soling class" after bracking the mast, wich obstruct his winning of a Gold medal. In one year he was able to win eight Championships in eight diferent modalitys in Brazil, and lets not forget the Gold in Atlanta and the Bronce in Sydney.

Mesures

Star is a high level class where we find great sailors most of them champions in other olympic modalitys and a great part of them are now in l'Escala.

The weather broadcast for tomorrow is 8-10 knots east winds. Tomorrow race is at noon.
